Many visitors head for the more developed Western Algarve. Tavira, on the eastern side, remains unspoilt and is known as the prettiest town in the Algarve. Restaurants serve a wide variety of food, especially fresh fish, and there are attractive riverside cafes. Little alleyways open onto squares and there is a thriving daily fish, fruit and vegetable market as well as good supermarkets. The beach is reached by a shuttle boat from Tavira to miles of golden sandbar. At Pedras del Rei a little train travels across the sand dunes to the beach.
