Tavira Rental – Cabanas Algarve

Algarve Portugal, The South’s Delight

Algarve or as it was baptized by the Arabs as Al Gharb meaning ‘to the west’, is the most southern province of the eleven that Portugal has been divided into.

Its variety in terrain which starts at the small town of Odeceixe on the west coast, nicely tucked into the Espinhaco do Cao mountain range bordering the coast and the brave Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its shoreline runs down through Aljezur, symbolic in the Portuguese history thanks to its castle which is one of the seven that appear on the flag of Portugal. Still enjoying the different shades that the fertile valleys offer, you continue along the shoreline to Alfambra, a walled in city and well-known as a fishing village and tourist attraction.

To the most western tip is the Cape of Saint Vicent and to the town of Sagres where Henry the Navegator first started his navigation school. At this point, you have come to the come into contact with the most attractive Algarve beaches. Long soft sandy stretches which enclose secret coves at the beginning where the outline of the coast is extremely flat around the towns of Lagos but after the city of Albufeira it turns into cliffs. Not leaving the hypnotizing view of the Atlantic, your car hire seems to know the route and continues on to Faro, the capital of this area after having taken this title away from the city of Silves in 1577. Here in Faro you have the main gateway into this southern region when arriving at this well-prepared international airport for your holiday stay. But there is still more beach towns like Tavira, a very historic medieval town and Castro Marim another city surrounded by a protective wall. From here, the journey northward following the Guadiana River, which is the natural border between Spain and Portugal.

Saved by its Ancestors

The Algarve region has seen all the cultures beginning with the Lusitanians, Celtics, Romans and Arabs who were forced out of Faro in 1249 by Sancho II. But thanks to the combination of all these people, especially the Arabs, the Algarve province ( http://www.lisbon-and-portugal.com/algarve/algarve-portugal.html ) now has a strong production of olive trees which produce rich olive oil, figs and almonds. It is said that the almond trees were a gift from a Moorish sultan who was in love with a Nordic princess. She dearly missed the snow covered ground in winter and what most resembled that were the almond trees in full bloom in the spring. From this, the Algarve makes a rich dessert from almonds, figs, eggs and sugar called ‘morgados’. And thanks to the dry weather, pears, tomatoes, melons and grapes are among the delicious fruits available year round.

Algarve Wine, A Sweet Caress for Your Lips

Grapes in Portugal are synonymous to wine, and Algarve has quite a variety. The exportation of wine from this region started under the Muslim domain and reached its climax in the 14th and 15th centuries. Lagos, Portimao and Tavira are the principal wine producers.

+ The Algar Dry from Lagos is a dry wine, served very cold for appetizers. The dry and sweet moscatel wines are aged in oak barrels for at least seven years and have about 18% alcohol content.

+ Alfonso III is another dry wine from Lagos and also served very cold.

+ Cruz de Portugal is a smooth red wine which should be served at room temperature for dessert.

+ From Tavira you have Licoroso de Tavira which is very sweet and dark in colour, served at room temperature.

+ Medronho is a type of liquer very well known all over the Algarve region and usually found in the typical ‘tascas’ or taverns and served in glasses from Oporto.

Cute places to see around Portugal

Between Tavira and Castro Marim, one can easily manage a nice beach day in Monte Gordo and a leisurley stroll through the Natural Reserve Park to appreciate the marvellous view of pink flamengos and long-legged storks soaring in and out of sight. For golf lovers, near Albufeira and hidden among pine trees and the shore you will find Villamoura with its campestral fields for playing a relaxing game of golf. Wherever you go in this region, be it on the coast or deep in the forest area, there are all kinds of hotels with great facilities for your stay in Algarve or the capital of Portugal, Lisbon.

Tavira Villa – Cabanas Algarve

When people ask me about Tavira I can honestly say that I sometimes don’t really know what to say.

Do I tell them about the stunning miles of empty beaches, the fact that the town has its own island just off shore, the memorable seafood meals I have had there, the seemingly endless rounds of festivals when the whole town parties, the unbelievably low price of a beer or a coffee…

Or do I just say "Oh it’s alright there I suppose, I am not sure you would like it though."

Why the dilemma?

On the one hand I have a business that involves recommending Tavira to people looking to buy a property in Portugal or more specifically a property in Tavira. On the other hand I don’t want my beautiful town and area being over run by mass development.

Fortunately the local authorities have got it just right. There is no doubt that the town of Tavira and also the villages around are expanding. But the new building is sympathetic to the environment and surroundings. You will not find huge ugly tower blocks here.

No, the new property in Tavira is either low rise apartments, usually set in beautiful gardens with a generously sized communal pool, or detached villas with their own grounds and private pool.

Occasionally, a traditional town house near the centre of town comes on the market and these are usually snapped up very quickly.

People love the fact that the older properties in the narrow cobblestone streets are naturally cool in the summer yet warm in the winter. The proximity to the bars and restaurants of town is another added bonus.

The restaurant and bar scene in Tavira is lively and great fun. The locals love to party but all, young and old alike seem to enjoy themselves by having noisy conversations with their friends and family. It’s rare to see a local in a drunken state and you certainly do no get any of the mindless chanting so common in the UK on a weekend night.

Restaurants are open late and are always happy to provide either a snack or a full 3 course meal. The local seafood is fantastic and you will not believe the prices.

The other great thing about Tavira is its proximity from the UK; just 2 hours by plane into Faro from Gatwick and then a half hour or less drive. If everything goes to plan and you are brave with your timing to get to the airport in the UK it’s possible to do it in just a fraction over 4 hours from London. Don’t cut it too fine though and miss your plane, (as I have done).

Tavira is certainly a jewel in the crown of the Algarve, but it is not a gaudy, flashy diamond, but, rather, it is a quiet and beautiful, understated sapphire.

Please come and have a look at the great property in Tavira… but, just not all of you.

1. Tavira is steeped in history and the town actually dates back to around 1.000 BC. During the Moorish occupation the fishing industry of this town was of huge importance and this industry remains a staple of Tavira today.

2. It is believed that the original name for Tavira was Baal Saphon.

3. Tavira has a defunct tuna canning industry. Storks now use the factory’s high brick chimneys as nesting sites.

4. Tavira is only 30 minutes drive away from Faro international airport. Faro is served by a number of international airlines including budget carriers. This makes it an easy long weekend destination from all parts of the UK.

5. Unlike in Spain, Tavira restaurants are open for business from around 7pm in the evenings. This means that if you want to have a meal in a busy restaurant packed with locals as well as tourists you do not have to wait until after 10pm.tavira holidays

6. Tavira has a castle which dates back to the 13th century and 37 (yes, 37) churches.

7. Tavira has miles of beautiful beaches which are on an island situated in the Rio Formosa. There are regular and easy boat transfers to the beaches which are well serviced by small bars and restaurants.

8. In 1755 a massive earthquake with an epicentre some 200km south west of Cape St Vincent hit the Algarve. The quake destroyed most parts of Tavira and it is believed to have registered around 9 on the Richter scale. This earthquake is perhaps better known as the Lisbon quake because of the terrible damage caused to that city.

9. The so called "Roman" bridge which links the town’s two halves (separated by the Rio Gilao) is actually of Moorish origin.

10. The Moors controlled Tavira until 1242 when Dom Paio Peres Correia fought a bloody battle to win back the town. He took this action after 7 seven of his trusted knights were killed by the enemy in a cease fire. The battle had a terrible effect on the population of the town with many people dying in the fighting

11. Tavira has a camera obscura. This unusual camera provides visitors with a fascinating circular view of the town.

12. Tavira has a growing property market but development is low rise and well controlled by local planning. Property remains good value with everything available from stunning detached villas to spacious apartments in the heart of the town.

Finding the Perfect Tavira Apartment

Getting The Most Out Of The Algarve

If you are taking to the most popular part of Portugal this year while on holiday, nothing will allow you to enjoy the Algarve more and get the most out of your time on holiday as much as a car.

Unfortunately, even with it’s large tourist base, public transport leaves most wanting in the Algarve.

in tavira algarve

If you hire a car before you go, you can leave the airport and step right into your own vehicle. You are then free to travel wherever and whenever you feel you wish to, and do not have to rely on organised day trips or taxi’s to get around.
You will be able to explore the glorious beaches and picturesque villages that are scattered in between them. So many of these little fishing towns offer an experience unmatched by the rest of the area as they still hold that old world charm that has been lost by the modern and updated tourist based majority.

Car hire will allow you easy access to Tavira, a town famous for it’s very rich and evident history with it’s medieval town planning and lovely old buildings. This is a very good way to soak up some Portuguese traditionalism. Another excellent choice for this is the ancient town of Loule, where you can enjoy the traditional market place and Roman relics still seen all over even today.

If you want to take advantage of the shopping and night life in Portimao, a car can allow you to walk around at your leisure and avoid the long queues for taxi’s at the end of an evening.

For a more natural side of sight seeing you can take a driving tour of the dramatic and beautiful coastlines and very impressive Monchique mountains. These landscapes will certainly leave you impressed!

Aside from all of the fantastic natural offerings the Algarve has to offer, you will likely want to take advantage of the modern additions such as the large amount of water parks, zoos, marine parks and theme parks dotted all over the area. Car hire can certainly be a big help when choosing to go to one of these attractions as you do not have to leave or arrive at specific times, or rely on strangers not to make you late! Many of these attractions offer deals if you purchase tickets for several parks at once.

So, the Algarve will give you plenty to see and do, and having a car to your disposal will certainly make the pace of seeing your chosen attractions much faster and smoother. It is highly likely that with all of the deals available now it will work out cheaper than paying for Taxis and transport during your holiday.

Want to go on holiday in Tavira Algarve ?

Where To Go On Holiday In The Algarve

The spectacular Atlantic coast of the Algarve is blessed by dramatic rocky outcrops, long sandy beaches and one of the longest sunshine records in Europe.

Home to wonderful golden sand beaches warmed by over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, the Algarve coastline of southern Portugal stretches from the spanish border at Vila Real across to Cabo de Sao Vicente, the most westerly point of continental Europe. Being just 40km in width from North to South means the region can be easily explored within a relatively short period of time.

The Western Algarve is renowned for its sandy cove beaches and many traditional fishing villages while the East, with the region’s capital at Faro, has flatter sandy stretches of beach and many pretty islands, accessed by boat, lying just offshore.

tavira golf

Forming a natural border between Portugal and Spain is the Rio Guardiana surrounded by a collection of pretty villtop towns with stunning views out to sea and a renowned nature reserve.

A pedestrianised bridge dating back to Roman times spans the gently flowing Rio Gilao which flows through Tavira, one of the eastern Algarve’s most attractive towns with its maze of cobbled streets, interesting shops and river front cafes.

Ferries depart from the town’s fish market for the spectacular local beach at Tavira Island, where 14km of golden sand and a backdrop of rugged dunes await.
Heading westwards, small towns such as Estoi with its Roman ruins and Loule, in the rolling foothills of the Serra do Caldeirao and famous for its colourful market are both well worth a visit. Faro offers something for everybody including museums, an impressive Cathedral, an intricate network of bustling streets filled with all types of shops, various estaurants and many local cafes in which to sit and watch the world go by.

Almost halfway along the Algarve’s 180km of coastline sits Vilamoura, home to one of Europe’s most chic marinas flanked by a promenade of convivial waterside cafes, stylish boutiques and a tempting selection of international restaurants. Pristine stretches of wide sandy beaches, world class golf courses and a wealth of sporting facilities all contribute to its wide appeal.

Stretching to the west of the erstwhile fishing village but now established resort of Albufeira are glorious golden sandy beaches. Vale de Parra, bordered by a fertile plain and low hills fringing the Atlantic Ocean, overlooks the picturesque and intimate coves of Castelo and Coelha at Sao Rafael as well as the sweeping golden crescent of sand that is Gale beach.

Bustling Armacao de Pera marks the end of this huge expanse of beach and has some excellent fish restaurants. Heading inland Monchique is a small hill town famous for its smoked meats and locally crafted x-shaped chairs.

Nestling in a valley of ucalyptus, pine and cork oaks is the pretty spa town known as Caldas de Monchique whose natural springs date back to Roman times and are reputed to have healing powers. Foia, at 902m the highest peak on the Algarve, affords breathtaking views on a clear day of both the south and west coastlines.

The important fishing port and regional centre of Portimao lies at the mouth of the Ribeira de Arade, which has its source in the hills of Monchique.

Offering excellent shopping facilities it is also famous for quayside restaurants where the tradition is to eat freshly caught sardines, barbecued over charcoal and accompanied by salad, fresh bread and the local ‘vinho verde’ (young red or white wine).

Lagos is the gateway to the western Algarve, an area of glorious beaches and peaceful villages. Originally established by the Moors this fortified city is steeped in a rich cultural history with walls dating back to the 15th and 16th Centuries, narrow cobbled streets, an eclectic array of churches, an excellent daily market, many traditional craft shops and a wealth of first rate restaurants.

Enjoying an ideal climate of mild winters followed by hot and sunny summers, cooled by pleasant sea breezes, the Algarve lends itself perfectly to outdoor living. However, this lovely region has so much more to offer than just wonderful beaches! Probably the most famous of the wide variety of sporting facilities available is golf with various championship courses dotted along the coast and more being planned all the time.

World class facilities include the famous Royal Course at Quinta do Lago, the recently opened Millennium course and four other celebrated courses at Vilamoura. Tennis, horse riding, scuba diving, surfing, water skiing, sailing and fishing are but a few of the other activities on offer.
There is also a variety of walking trails through woodland in the Serra de Monchique, along rugged cliff tops, or amongst the flora and wild grasses of the coastal sand dunes.

Several nature reserves are home to huge varieties of wildlife with storks, flamingoes, eagles, owls and vultures among the any species. The Rio Formosa wetlands of the eastern Algarve provide habitat for a diverse selection of indigenous and migrating birds. Within this protected area, accessed via a short, scenic boat trip from the mainland, the islands of Faro, Farol, Culatra and Armona all boast beautiful, natural beaches.

Portugal as a nation boasts a rich history and this region is a full contributor to that heritage. There are castles, forts and ruins to explore, interesting museums to meander around, statues, monuments and churches to visit. This coastline was also the departure point from which several epic voyages of discovery were launched hence Henry the Navigator features prominently in local history.

Cuisine

Cuisine here varies from the simple and unpretentious in the form of freshly caught sardines at a quayside bar to sophisticated Michelin starred restaurants. There is a huge variety of fresh fish, meat and vegetables to be sampled with sweet dishes using eggs, almonds, sugar and butter appearing on most menus. Likewise, the high standards of the wines are gaining a well deserved reputation with ‘vinho verde’ perhaps the best known. There are some fine reds, whites and roses to be sampled and all at very reasonable prices.

Fiestas

Hardly a week goes by without some kind of ‘festa’ taking place in towns and villages along the Algarve. These vary from highly organised displays of folk dancing and traditional music followed in the evenings by dazzling firework extravaganzas, to more simple traditional gatherings in small communities, all accompanied by sumptuous feasts of food and wine.

The Algarve – A fascinating land of stunning beaches, diverse sporting facilities, wonderful countryside and lovely cuisine waiting to be explored and enjoyed… with a charming population waiting to welcome you!

Getting there

The Algarve is well served by a wide range of no frills, charter and scheduled airlines flying into Faro airport. From here, all our properties can be reached in around an hour’s drive or less.

Tavira Golf – and the Tavira Resort

Classic Golf Holidays – The Algarve

The Algarve, in Southern Portugal, with its year-round sunshine, miles of golden sand beaches, and picturesque villages, has become one of Europe’s most popular golfing destinations.

But while there are many courses suiting all abilities, the Algarve is also perfect for non golfers, especially the eastern region around Tavira, with its stunning nature walks. At the other end of the scale, resorts such as Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo are mega destinations with all the golfing and sporting options you could want. Then, in Western Algarve, around the bustling holiday destination of Albufeira, you can holiday 24/7, combining championship golf with a hectic nightlife.

Western Algarve golf breaks
Besides bustling Albufeira, there is the charming old town of Lagos, set on one of the largest bays in the Algarve. Its 17th-century fort stands at the harbour entrance and a new marina with rows of excellent restaurants and bars draws the crowds. Alvor, an old port at the mouth of the Rio Alvor, has many traditional restaurants by the quay and a maze of cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses, shops and a few bars.

Golf holidaymakers should check out the renowned Pinta, one of the best courses in the Algarve, designed to retain natural valleys and undulations. Neighbouring Gramacho is also excellent and both courses are free of green fees for those lucky enough to be staying at the Pestana Hotels.

Central Algarve offers golf and more
Quinta do Lago is a premier golfing destination. Two of its four excellent 18-hole courses are listed among the Europe’s top 25 golf courses, and half of the 2000-acre resort comprises a residential and recreational estate, surrounded by pine forests.

This beautiful area is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria Formosa nature reserve. Nearby is a large shopping centre with a health club, nightclubs and restaurants, and scenic countryside runs along miles of secluded beaches.

Just 20 minutes’ drive from Faro International Airport, Vilamoura is one of Europe’s largest sport and leisure complexes. There are five golf courses, championship tennis courts, an acclaimed riding school, and fishing and shooting facilities. The resort’s large marina has many fine restaurants, cafes and shops.

Vale do Lobo, Portugal’s biggest luxury golf and beach resort, also 20 minutes from the airport at Faro, is one of Europe’s finest. Its two golf courses, the Royal and Ocean, provide stunning views of the coast, and its 5 km-long sandy beach, with dramatic red sandstone cliffs, provides non-golfers with seriously good beach and swimming options. The resort also offers tennis courts, a gymnasium and health and beauty centre, as well as restaurants and shops.

Eastern Algarve; golf tours without the crowds
For a less frenetic golfing experience and a chance to enjoy nature, head east from Faro towards the Spanish border. There are many hotels not far from the airport, close to some well-designed courses. Tavira, at the mouth of the River Gilao, is a fishing port dating from Moorish times. Nearby you’ll find Reserva do Sapal, one of Portugal’s most important nature reserves. And just across the border, on the Costa de la Luz, are many more great golf courses.
